Comfortable Sedation. Improved Care.
At Shoreline Dental Care, we understand that some people are anxious, fearful, or even phobic about having dental work done. However, that’s not the only reason why we offer conscious oral sedation at our practices.
You may want to request sedation if you:
- Would prefer to complete all of your treatment in just one visit
- Need a longer or more complex procedure performed
- Decide it would just be easier to “nap” through your dental work
- Are unable to sit comfortably for an extended period of time
Sedation dentistry can be used for any procedure, whether it’s getting implants or having a few fillings placed. We can even arrange to have your teeth cleaned at the same appointment if you so choose.
Oral Sedation is Extremely Safe for Our Patients
Our sedation dentists have completed extensive training and certification through the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS). This rigorous program enables us to provide predictable services that keep our patients’ safety at the forefront of everything that we do.
To be a candidate for oral sedation, we will need to thoroughly review your medical history, including any recent hospitalizations, medications taken, and supplement use. Please let us know if you have any allergies or a previous reaction to sedation.
What is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedatives involve the use of prescription strength medication that is taken just before your appointment, creating a relaxed, almost dreamlike state. Most people feel as if they are taking a nap and do not remember anything about the procedure. However, you will still be semi-conscious and able to answer simple questions or requests.
The medication gradually wears off on its own, unlike deep sleep dentistry completed with an IV. This provides us with a few hours to complete any necessary treatment, with ample time for you to be escorted home until the medication has completely left your system.
Please be sure to have a trustworthy friend or family member accompany you to and from any sedation dentistry procedure. We will provide you with written home care instructions, so that you can review them beforehand and refresh your memory once the sedative has worn off.
Nitrous Oxide / Laughing Gas
A lighter form of sedative available in our practices is “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is ideal for relieving mild anxiety and depressing pain receptors in the body. We frequently pair it with local anesthetic to complete anything from a small filling to a comprehensive smile makeover with dental implants.
Nitrous oxide may be contraindicated if you have a sinus infection or find it difficult to breathe through your nose. Please let us know if you have any severe allergies, such as those to egg products.
Take a Deep Breath and Relax
One of the newer services that we offer to help our patients relax is aromatherapy. Unless you have sensitive skin, we will apply a stick-on lavender strip at your upper chest, so that you can breathe in the soothing aroma while you’re reclined in our chair.
