Managing Bad Breath (Halitosis)
The fear of bad breath is probably one of the most embarrassing problems when it comes to being around new people (or even going on a date.) What most people don’t know though, is that covering the problem up with mints or gums isn’t always the solution. To really treat the problem, you need to know the cause.
Problem #1: Gum Disease
Periodontal disease is something a dentist (or hygienist) can usually smell from across the room. The common gum infection is triggered by plaque bacteria and tartar buildup under the gumlines, causing the gum tissues to detach from the teeth. This can lead to bone loss, tooth loss, and a whole lot of bad breath.
The best way to prevent gum disease is to floss daily and schedule routine preventive care appointments with your dentist. If bleeding doesn’t go away on its own, you might need periodontal treatment!
Problem #2: Allergies and Sinus Infections
Nasal drainage and mouth breathing are a big factor when it comes to causing bad breath. Dry mouth and excessive bacteria are a haven for bacteria to multiply. Don’t use alcohol-containing mouth rinses or sugar-filled mints, as these will only make the problem worse.
Problem #3: Diet and Medical Conditions
It’s pretty common knowledge that foods like dairy or garlic can give you bad breath. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know that halitosis could also be linked to certain diseases. If your mouth is healthy, you don’t have infections anywhere, and you avoided that spaghetti on purpose, yet you still have bad breath…you might need to see your physician!
